Abstract
Mozart's anniversary year 2006 has inevitably sparked renewed interest in the composer, not least in the fact that Mozart was a freemason. This short article places Mozart and his masonic works in the context of freemasonry in the eighteenth-century Habsburg Empire. The piece was originally commissioned to appear in the programme of the Grand Festival of the United Grand Lodge of England held in London, 26 April 2006 and was subsequently published in a special music edition of the newsletter of the Friends of the Library and Museum of Freemasonry, December 2006.
