Abstract
Benjamin Cooke's A Christmas Ode, scored for choir, soloists and orchestra, sets a text by Taylor White who was the first Secretary of the London Foundling Hospital. It was composed in 1763 to be performed by members of the Academy of Ancient Music, a scholarly, all-male music club that held its meetings in the Crown and Anchor tavern on the Strand in London, and of which Cooke was then the musical director. This edition is based on the version that was made by Andrew Pink (using the only known copy of the work in a manuscript in the library of the Royal College of Music, London) for a performance by the Chelmsford Singers and the Essex Baroque Orchestra at Chelmsford Cathedral, Essex, on 18 December 1999, directed by Peter Holman.
