Research Funders' Policies

It is increasingly common for research funders to stipulate that publications which are funded through their awards should be made publicly and freely available by deposit in openly accessible archives. The Wellcome Trust and some of the UK Research Councils are among the UK-based funders already to have mandated open access to research outputs as a condition of award.

The Wellcome Trust has published a Policy Statement, details of its Grant Conditions, and a FAQ for authors. Wellcome-funded UCL researchers should visit the UCL Library Services Guide to Wellcome Trust open access funding for further information.

An overview of the policies of a number of international funding bodies, including the UK Research Councils, is available through the Juliet database.
